Rayentray Legend
Rayen and Pehuén: the lovers
who never gave up
In the ancient lands of Andean Patagonia, a tale is told of a beautiful young woman named Rayen and her husband, Pehuén. They were beloved by their tribe for their kindness and willingness to help others. Pehuén, in particular, was known for his care of the sick.
However, jealousy festered in the heart of Rayen's older brother, Melivilu. Envious of Pehuén's kindness and the love he received from the tribe, Melivilu made a pact with the devil. In exchange for his soul, he cursed Pehuén, causing him to gradually lose his strength.
Despite his illness, Pehuén's kindness and the respect he received from the tribe only grew. Furious at this, Melivilu took advantage of a full moon night to kidnap Pehuén. He locked him in a large jar and threw him into the lake.
Rayen, not finding her husband, searched for him tirelessly. She traveled through different places for several days, until she became lost in the forest. Unable to find her way back to her tribe, she continued searching for her beloved in the most inhospitable parts of the forest.
Some time later, fishermen found the jar at the bottom of the lake and threw it against the stones of the shore. Since then, on full moon nights, the forest falls silent and the flowers lose their perfume. It is said that Pehuén, now free in the air, meets Rayen in the most illuminated part of the valley. He brings her as a gift all the perfume of the flowers and the melody of the birds.
“...So, if you ever find yourself in the Patagonian mountain range on a full moon night, you may witness the magic of the forest falling silent and the flowers losing their perfume...”
And perhaps, if you listen closely, you may even hear the melody of the birds and the sweet scent of the flowers, as Pehuén and Rayen share their eternal love.
